Conservation Intern (2019 Summer Internship)

Location: Morro Bay, CA, with services throughout the district

Primary Responsibilities:

Work closely with Project Managers and Engineer on various conservation projects:

• Flow monitoring and irrigation evaluations

• Landowner consultation and Best Management Practice design

• Restoration work—seed collection, propagation, wind fencing, sand sampling, biological monitoring and plant surveys on the Oceano Dunes

• Other tasks as needed

Potential Projects: Road and trail assessment; Conservation planning, permitting support and workshop preparation; Preparing plans and permits

Hours & Benefits: Part-time, temporary without benefits. The estimated hours per week are 20 to 40 hours.

Salary: $15 to $17/hour. This position is funded by local/state/federal grants and private contracts.

Minimum Requirements:

Must be currently enrolled at either Cal Poly San Luis Obispo or Cuesta College, be in good standing with the college, and working toward a degree in soil science, agriculture, agronomy, natural resources, engineering or related area.

Knowledge and interest in agricultural best management practices, natural resource conservation and water-quality monitoring are preferred. Knowledge of basic business software is required. Must have a valid California driver's license.

Applicant should have strong written and oral communication skills. Attention to detail and self-motivation are essential. The successful candidate must be able to work with limited supervision.

Must be able to lift and/or carry loads up to 50 pounds and occasionally more than 50 pounds. The job will require walking, standing, bending, squatting, kneeling, handling/operating tools and equipment.
