Sediment basins apply where physical conditions or land ownership preclude treatment of a sediment source by the installation of erosion control measures to keep soil and other materials in place.
The sediment basin practice considers storage capacity, structural design including dams, spillways and drainage facilities, and safety measures.
Sediment basins must be sized to accommodate the sediment load and excess runoff above natural predicted runoff. In addition, a primary spillway and an emergency spillway must be installed to prevent basin failure.
